I chose three: a warm cream, a deep brown, and the dusty terracotta of a good clay pot. Everything I have bought since has had to live inside that agreement.

It sounds restrictive. It is the opposite. Every piece works with every other piece, which means the mornings are quiet and the suitcase is small.

Constraint is not the enemy of style. It is where style comes from.

People assume a limited palette looks limited. In practice it looks considered — as though every choice was made on purpose, because for once it was.
